The first meal of the day is typically occurs after 8 hours of fasting, or if
you ate earlier the previous day, 12 hours or more. As mentioned in
Chapter 13 Brain food, a healthy body needs to maintain a
consistent blood glucose/sugar level. The correct blood glucose level
aids in providing the brain with enough energy to function.
For the
mind and body to work efficiently, these glucose levels must be
maintained at consistent levels.
If the body does not receive the proper nourishment after a night of
fasting, such as a high carbohydrate breakfast, it will draw the
needed nutrients from the reserves stored in the liver. Drawing
glucose from the liver every morning puts undue stress on this organ
not to mention causes mental and physical sluggishness.
People who have made a habit of skipping breakfast claim that they
dont suffer from any sluggishness or reduced efficiency. However this
is because they have been skipping breakfast for so long that they
have become calloused to these sensations.
The habit of skipping breakfast or even an inadequate breakfast does
cause detrimental effects on the body even if they arent noticed.
Studies have shown that skipping breakfast affects your mood and
performance. Mood and performance are directly related to study
performance. The better you feel the better you study. The higher your
performance, the more you study.
Fatigue or tiredness is a common reason students pass up studying.
Fatigue originates not only from inadequate rest or excessive work,
but is also directly related to nutritional deficiencies in the body. This is
another reason to ensure that you fuel your body with the correct
nutrients.
Not only is skipping breakfast considered unhealthy, but studies have
also shown most people who do skip breakfast make it up by adding
a non-nutritional meal before lunch. This would typically consist of a
coffee and a pastry, which isnt very healthy either.
A lot of people that do have breakfast indulge in a typical American
breakfast (fried eggs, buttered toast and coffee). This type of meal is
