the blood stream. Carbon monoxide is a poison and in large
dosages will restrict oxygen flow through the body which can
cause unconsciousness and even death.
Not only are the effects of smoking not healthy for the student,
research has shown that nonsmokers are quicker at remembering
things than smokers. This same research also shows that smoking can
affect the mental performance of a smoker as much two alcoholic
drinks.
Further research indicates that if you do smoke that you should not
light up before learning new material. You also shouldnt try to quit or
deprive yourself of a cigarette during studying, because the
withdrawal symptoms will distract you from your studying.
Smoking is highly addictive and unhealthy. Make a break to quit
smoking and thus improve your studying performance.
Reducing stress associated with drug and alcohol abuse:
Both drug and alcohol are used by students as a coping mechanism.
Whether it is drug abuse or alcohol, the effects on the brain are not
only detrimental, but can be permanent. Neither alcohol nor drugs
should be deemed as a way to cope with the stress associated with
studying.
Alcohol slowly destroys brain tissue. As long as there is alcohol in the
body, the ability to learn and remember is impaired. Not only does it
impair new learning, is also destroys brain tissue which you will never
be able to regain. The best advice is to stay away from it all during
studying.
The same advice holds true for substance abuse. Marijuana is a
common drug of choice for many students who believe the
detrimental effects are less than that of alcohol. While marijuana has
not been shown to destroy brain cells, the effect on the brain while
under the influence is similar to that of alcohol.
In the case of harder drugs such as crack, cocaine, and other illicit
substances, they have an even more detrimental effect on the brains
ability to function, let alone learning.
