Typing: Do you still look at the keys when you type? This can be
a habit that reduces your typing speed.
Using the phone: Do you find that you answer the phone at
home as you would at work?
Saying thank-you: Have you ever found that you have slipped
and said thank-you to a vending machine?
Studying can be a habit too. Try and make it your ‘good’ habit and
you will find success much easier. The way you read, memorize, and
use your cognitive abilities are all habits. Whether they help or hinder
you is up to you. Habits can be changed and habits can be improved.
Reinforcing good habits changes the way that you unconsciously
perform tasks; it also offers the mind a new way of perceiving
information. By changing the way you think through habitual
reinforcement, you can become an effective learner.
Personal tools will not be able to help you immediately, but if you work
at them overtime they can be your greatest assets. By becoming
conscious of your habits, using your voice, writing and ensuring that
you get enough sleep, you will be taking the steps to effective
studying.
Developing your skills & tools:
Just as a carpenter requires many years of apprenticeship before he
can go out on his own, so do you need to practice and sharpen your
tools. You don’t need many years of experience, as you already know;
some of these tools will work immediately. However, to be able to
carry your toolbox with you for a lifetime, you will need to learn to use
them in everyday situations.
You don’t need to be a student to be able to put these skills and tools
into use. You can use them everyday and for everyday uses. Here are
some examples of everyday situations that you can use these tools for:
Remembering a grocery list
Remembering a ‘to-do’ list
Remembering peoples names at a party
Remembering directions to a destination
Memorizing telephone numbers
Remembering important dates such as birthdays
An apprentice carpenter
may want only a hammer
and saw, but a master
craftsman employs many
precision tools.
