We are in the computer age where keyboards now replace the
written word. Computerized exams are replacing the written exam,
and one would think the art of hand writing is fast becoming a thing of
the past. This is not the case. It is still very important to ensure that not
only do you possess good hand writing skills, but you have the ability
to write for long periods of time. Learning to write properly can be an
enjoyable exercise and well worth the reward. Elegant writing is an
art form and appreciated amongst most people. By being able to
write well in this day and age is treated as a valuable skill.
Just as the act of writing is valuable in itself, the writer also needs to
be able to have a good command the language. By having a good
common grasp of the language, you are then able to embrace the
finer elements of the craft. Ensure that your writing skills are proficient
in such things as spelling, punctuation, and grammar before you
embark on perfecting your prose. Practicing and improving your
writing and command of the language is invaluable in the academic
world and everyday life.
Writing as a study tool is very important as well. Some of the ways you
can use writing for studying are:
The act of writing out notes helps in the memorization of them
(you can remember up to 60% of your material this way)
Using question and answer periods for practicing your essays
and short questions answers.
Using shorthand
Shorthand is a valuable skill for the classroom. Many times students find
that their lecturer either talks too fast or runs through information too
quickly to actually have any time to write it down. Short hand is a
great skill to have in these situations. Although spending the time to
learn shorthand may not seem worth while for those with only one or
two classes, but by learning only a few common words you can
increase your note taking considerably.
