Example: Memorization Cues
Ebbinghaus realized the importance of cues while studying, and
recent research has confirmed this. Studies have shown that when
research participants created their own retrieval cues, they were able
to remember, almost without error, lists of up to 500 and 600 words.
For each word, the participants were asked to generate another word
(cue) to remind them of the next word. The system of cues works best
for students when the information is related and unique. An example
would be coat and jacket which are both related and unique.
Personal tools:
The personal tools section has been put together to help students in
their everyday life to maximise their use of all the study tools. Personal
tools are more about your approach to study tools, rather than a study
tool itself.
Sleep
Sleep is by far the most important personal tool you have. Without
sleep our mind and body can not function. It is important for the
student not only to get a good nights sleep, but to get enough sleep
too.
Many professionals advocate a minimum of seven hours sleep a night.
This may not be enough for most people. If you are suffering from a
sickness or stress your body may need more than the normal amount
of rest. It is important for the student to recognize their own bodys
needs and wants and to ensure that they provide it with enough
sleep. A student who studies a few more hours in lieu of sleep ends up
studying inefficiently and ends up taking more time overall to learn
new material.
Some studies have also found that if you go to sleep immediately after
you learn something new youll remember more if it than if you were
to learn information at any other time. Given these studies, it is worth
including some study sessions just before you got to sleep.
Sleep is a component of a balanced lifestyle and more discussion
about sleep and student lifestyles can be found in Appendix 6
Student lifestyle.
