Taking notes during a live lecture, audio, or video recording isn’t just
about jotting down what the lecturer has to say verbatim. It is being
able to take effective lecture notes which include such points as your
preparation techniques before the lecture starts and seating
placement during the lecture itself. Not to mention being able to
consolidate the information delivered during a lecture and keeping
up with the amount of writing that is required for some classes. 
Effective note taking in lectures is a valuable study tool; however the
topic is too large to deal within the study tools chapter alone. For

Class Lectures.
Study review:
A valuable study skill overlooked by many students is the ability to
consolidate and distil all the material a student is required to know for
the exam. This is an important skill that can reduce your overall study
time and ensure you are prepared for your exam. Study review is such
an effective tool that an entire chapter is dedicated to it. Refer to
Chapter 12 – Study Review for more information.
Power tools: 
Power tools use the ‘power’ of your
own intellect to improve
memorization and retention skills to amazing levels. The three power
tools that are discussed below are Baroque music, visualization and
mnemonic devices.
Baroque music:
Baroque music is a style of music that was predominant during the
period of 1650-1750 and is a type of music which is highly effective at
stimulating the alpha brain waves in our brain. It is during this ‘state of
mind’ that a student has the greatest access to the higher parts of the
brain. This is ‘state of mind’ that you want to be studying in. By simply
relaxing and listening to baroque music you can move into this ‘state
of mind’.
Some people believe it was the method used to construct the music
that makes it so beneficial to our learning. Baroque music is a style of
music that reflects the overall philosophy, intellectual discourse, and
higher learning that was present during the period. It was also during
this period that the composers decided to include such themes as
