When using mind maps be sure to follow these basic principles:
Be clear:  Make sure your writing is neat and can be read
‘visually’.
Make connections: Make sure that the connections between
information are logical and easily understood.
Emphasis information: Try emphasising the information. This can
be done by using different colours, different font types and size,
as well as including illustrations.
The illustration below is a good example of a typical mind map. This
mind map is of a commercial law course and depicts each of the
subject areas the student will need to learn for the course. Each
subject heading is drawn in a different colour to emphasis it is a
subheading.  
By simply using colour, and other illustration types, you will have the
ability to put a lot of information in a mind map. Your mind map
(picture) may actually be worth a thousand words.
