your concentration, the stronger it can become. This chapter focuses
on the factors that affect a students ability to concentrate and also
includes ways to improve students concentration.
Factors that affect concentration
An inability to concentrate for long periods of time really means that
distractions have taken the place of your concentration. The mind is
like an engine, it is always running. We are always thinking about
things which is one reason concentrating, or being able to focus on
a specific topic is so difficult. These things that our mind is attracted
to are known as distracters and there are two types of distracters,
internal and external.
External distracters:
External distracters are the distracters around you in your physical
environment that cause the mind to wonder. The most common
external distracters are:
External Distracters
1.
Music: Not only does music distract the mind, some of the most
popular music even interferes with learning.
2.
Poor lighting conditions: Flickering lights and lack of adequate
light also distract from concentration.
3.
Ambient noise: Whether it is street noise or the white noise of
the TV or radio, these are both distracters.
4.
Temperature: If you are too cold or too hot, either way these
conditions will effect your concentration.
5.
Interruptions: Having the right state of mind is very important
for concentration; interruptions take you out of this frame of
mind.
All of these external distracters have been discussed in greater detail
in ©hapter 4 Preparation. Refer back to this chapter to learn how to
prevent these distracters as well for further information on your study
environment.
