Chapter 5 Concentration
Chapter Summary:
What is concentration
Factors that affect concentration
Improving concentration
Don’t try to do two or more things at once. Set priorities so that you are not
worrying about something else while you are attending to the task at hand.
Arrange you work space so that your eyes aren’t drawn to the other jobs
that need to be done. The time you invest to organize your space will be
paid back with improved efficiency. Don’t put unreasonable demands on
you attention span…Even if you are under pressure. Time spent taking a
regular break will increase your over all productivity. But make it a real
break; don’t just switch to another demanding task…Lack of sleep is a
major reason for poor concentration. Learn to take catnaps or use a
meditation technique instead of a drug to help you to keep going until you
get a good nights rest.
William Bennett, M.D.
What is concentration?
Concentration is the ability to focus on a specific topic for an
extended period of time. The ability to study effectively relies heavily
on your ability to concentrate. Without strong concentration, a lot of
study time can spent ineffectively.
For many students, once they get past the first few hurdles
being
motivation and procrastination, concentration seems to be the next
big obstacle. We find ourselves bombarded with tasks to accomplish
and overwhelming commitments that seem to consume our day and
detract from our ability to concentrate. Many students find that when
they get down to studying, their mind is too preoccupied with ‘other’
things to even think about concentrating effectively.
Concentration is the cornerstone to successfully studying. Without
focused concentration, studying can become repetitive (going over
the same material again and again), seem like a laborious task, and
also cause negative associations with studying.
There are many ways to improve your concentration. Concentration is
much like a muscle that needs to be exercised. The more you exercise

why so few people
