be. Some examples of shock factors would be anything that is
outrageous, different, bizarre, or weird. Many students find that
depicting images that have a shock factor help in their ability to
remember information.
Intensity:
The greater the intensity of the event the more likely you are to
remember it. The greater the intensity of the sensory, emotional, or
shock factor, the stronger the memory.  The stronger the memory, the
longer you will be able to remember it.
Understanding how the mind works is the first step in learning how to
use it effectively. There are many normal people that have been able
to have extraordinary success using tools to improve their memory.
Some believe they are naturally gifted, however they are actually
using highly refined memory tools to improve their memory, called
mnemonics.
Mnemonics:
A mnemonist is an individual who uses memory techniques, called
mnemonics, to greatly improve their memory.
Although mnemonist’s
may come across as having a photographic memory, it is not their
memory but the techniques they use that help them accomplish this
feat. A mnemonist’s abilities give us an insight of the possibilities for all
students.
Long-term Memory Mnemonist
One of the world’s most famous mnemonists was a man called “S” who
was described by Alexander Luria (Russian Psychologist) as a man
whose memory appeared to have virtually no limits.
S. could reproduce series of words of any length, regardless of how
long the words had been presented to him. Luria studied S. over a
period of 30 years and found that even 15 years after a session, S.
could still recall the information.
How did S. remember so much? Luria found that S. relied heavily on
the mnemonic of visual imagery. He translated information that he
needed to remember into visual images. For example, when S. was
asked to remember the word green, he visualized a green flowerpot
and when he was asked to remember the color red, he visualized a
man in a red shirt coming toward him. The number 1 was seen as a
proud well-built man and so forth.
