Each one of use has the ability to learn through any of these methods;
however the mind does have one dominant learning type over the
three and it is this dominant learning type which is also the strongest.
This means that students who are visual learners have a learning style
more catered to academic learning than a kinesthetic learner. If you
are a kinesthetic learner and in an academic environment, there is no
need to worry; you can still change your dominant learning style.
Although we are predisposed to a dominant learning style, it is not
fixed. Many children have switched from being left-handed to right-
handed though an injury, such as a broken arm.
It is possible to
change your dominant learning style.
However, success in the academic world shouldnt be confined to a
learning style that works best in this environment. There are many
other ways to succeed in the academic world, such as using
techniques that work with your dominant learning style (which may
not be the learning style that works best for an academic
environment).
A student should develop all three learning modalities as much as they
can. Developing three modalities are a far better form of preparation
for the world of learning than developing only one that caters only to
learning in an academic environment.
Your multiple intelligences
Intelligence is generally an ability which is identified by a set of
characteristics. The theory of multiple intelligences, or people having
more than one form of intelligence, has been with us for decades. It
has been the work of Dr. Howard Gardner of Harvard University that
has identified seven distinct intelligences which are generally
accepted by the scientific community. The seven characteristics are,
as described by Gardener are:
