Yet, this is the state that most students are
in when they are
studying.
2.
Theta waves: Theta waves don’t have any real value to an
effective approach to studying, but they are included because
they are important during sleep. Theta waves are most common in
certain types of meditation and just before the body drops off to
deep sleep.
3.
Delta waves: Delta waves are most common during deep sleep.
They are also considered the slowest of the brain waves. Delta
waves determine the deepness of the sleep which is a very
important component to effective studying.
To study effectively,
you need to have enough deep sleep.
4.
Alpha waves: These are the most important brain waves for
studying. Alpha waves only appear when you are in a very
relaxed, fully awake state. This is a state where there is very little
stress on the body or brain. It is in this state where you have the
greatest access to the higher parts of brain. This is the state you
want to be in when you study and write exams!
Each of the brain waves affects the brain in different waves. For
students, the most important of all the brain waves are the alpha
waves. Although it takes some time to get into this state, especially for
students that haven’t experienced it, it is the state that can improve
your study efforts by up to 400%.
“Hey, what do you think drives all this grey matter up here? Electricity.
It's brain waves surfing on synaptic junctions. If your radio can go out
because of sun spots, why can't your cerebellum? It's all a matter of
reception and it seems to me these signals are going to get crossed
somehow. It's all logical.”
Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider, Northern Exposure, Mister Sandman, 1994
Using both sides of your brain
We have already discussed each of the three parts of the brain and
the four different types of brain waves, but did you know that the
brain has the tendency to use either the left side or right side?
The more you use
your brain, the more
brain you will have
to use.
