Limbic brain: Research indicates that the limbic brain is the place
of storage for long-term memories. The limbic brain is also home to
the emotions, which explains the strong connections between
memory and emotions. This connection is one of the secrets to
effective studying and is discussed in later chapters.
3.
Cortical brain: The cortical brain makes sense of all our sensory
information, synthesizes it, and acts upon it.  It is very important
during studying to ensure that the cortical brain is performing most
of the tasks.
Each of the three triune brains do not function in isolation, rather they
work (most of the time) together. Each of the ‘brains’ are connected
to each other by specialized cells and structures.
It is impossible to turn off the reptilian brain and use only the cortical
brain for studying, because each of the triune brains are linked and
function together. However it is possible to use certain study
techniques that will focus on the cortical and limbic brain to provide
an optimal mental platform for studying. These study techniques are
described in Chapter 6 Study tools.
Using your brain (waves)
As we go through our day using the different parts of our triune brain,
we also use different states of mind for the activities we are
undertaking. There are four basic states of mind which are associated
to distinct brain waves; Alpha, Beta, Delta and Theta. Each of these
brain waves helps the brain complete various functions more
efficiently as we accomplish our daily activities.
1.
Beta waves: Beta waves are the most common state of mind we
find our self in. They are used most often when we are performing
tasks that have a definite purpose. Activities such as walking,
talking, planning, analyzing, and many other daily tasks fit into this
category.  This is also the state of mind we spend most of our lives.
This is the best state of mind to be in when dealing with all the
information bombarding us everyday.  However, this isn’t the best
state of mind for studying. This state of mind is objective based, and
does not handle comprehension, memorization, or recall very well.
