of these three brains have developed during the difference stages of
evolution which could explain each of their unique functions.
1.
Reptilian brain:  This has been classed as the most primitive part of
the brain. It governs the lowest levels of thought that are typical of
reptiles, such as regulating bodily functions; breathing, heart rate,
and hunger. This is also the part of the brain that our most primal
instincts come from. The ‘fight or flight’ response to danger and
territory that is most closely related to our own survival instincts are
home to this part of the brain.
2.
Limbic brain: The limbic brain is believed to evolve after the
reptilian brain and handles the higher level functions of the brain.
The limbic brain sits right on top of the reptilian brain. The limbic
brain has also been referred to as the middle brain or ‘mammalian’
brain. This is because it functions similarly to most other mammal’s
brains. The mammalian brain governs emotions, sexuality, and the
regulation of immune and hormonal systems within the body.
3.
Cortical brain: The cortical brain is where all the higher brain
functions take place. It is the outermost layer on the brain itself and
has the appearance of looking wrinkled (It is actually folded to
conceal its enormous size). This is the thinking brain. This is where all
the higher intelligence takes place, such as our ability to reason,
understand language, and conceive abstract concepts.
How does the triune brain affect your studying?
You may be asking yourself, how does understanding the brain effect
my studying? It affects our ability to study in an enormous way! Just as
each of the parts of the triune brain has a separate function, they also
affect our ability to study in different ways.
1.
Reptilian brain: You wouldn’t actually be able to use the reptilian
brain for studying. It doesn’t have the ability to reason or retain
information in long term memory. Understanding the reptilian brain
is very important because it can dominate our behavior. It has the
ability to block out access to the other parts of the higher brain.
This would mean that if you are physically attacked (fight or flight)
or responding instinctually, your access to your higher brain
functions are significantly reduced. This is not the state you want to
be in if you are studying.
