motivation. If you are not motivated enough to read this book, then
chances are we won’t be able to help you. You need to be
motivated to read this book, and you need to be motivated to
succeed in your studies.
If you aren’t there yet, that’s fine. We have put together a whole
chapter on the subject. Just make sure you are motivated enough to
get there! We will show you how to motivate yourself and your
studying abilities. Motivation will take you a long way, but it won’t get
you anywhere if you don’t supply some of it yourself.
Your brain
If you were going to buy a computer, some of the first questions you
would ask are how fast is the processor? How much memory does it
have? How big is the hard drive? But we can’t do that with our own
brain. The brain we are born with can not be upgraded (at least not
yet), you can’t install additional memory and you definitely can’t swap
it for a better one.  The thing is we don’t even need to upgrade!  We
already have all the ‘hardware’ we need without worrying about
upgrading.
Our brain has over a billion neurons, and for each neuron, there can
be up to 20,000 connections between them. That works out to trillions
of possible connections. Each connection can be a piece of
information. That is far more than any computer on the earth. What we
really need is the ‘software’ to improve our ‘hardware’.
Our brains are fully capable of handling the information we need to
learn, we just need to learn how to handle it. That’s where motivation
and ‘effective study’ comes in.  We need to be motivated to change
some of our habits and the way we use our mind.
You can learn anything
You are already successful in reading (you wouldn’t be reading this
book if you weren’t). Many people believe that they can’t learn new
material because they aren’t ‘smart enough’ or ‘just don’t have what
it takes’. We know that this isn’t true. For the most part, we all have the
same size brains, only some of us can use if more effectively than
others.  We also know that we all have what it takes, it is just
motivating yourself to actually learning it that is the challenge.
Many of life’s failures
are those people who
did not realize how
close they were to
success when they
gave up.
