Learning to learn
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one
persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
George Bernard Shaw
The rate that information is bombarding us everyday is astonishing. We
are fed information from various types of media; TV, internet,
newspapers, radio, textbooks, advertising, and the list can go on. The
problem with having so much information is that it becomes very
difficult to be able to synthesize it all. The simple answer is that we
dont. Its almost impossible to absorb everything around us. However,
we do have the ability to focus on the information we want to
synthesize and effectively learn it. The trouble is that we have never
learned how to learn effectively.
We can all learn, and we do. We have all learned a language,
learned to read and write, and
have also
learned a thousand other
things. We just havent been able to learn effectively and that is
because for most of us, we have learned by accident. If you dont
learn by accident, then you learn by repetition. Learning by rote is an
example of this and is a very old way to learn new information in the
information era.
Effective learning goes back to basics; we go back to learning how
to learn effectively. The techniques are simple. They help us, whether
you are a student or not to cope and succeed in this information
revolution.
Motivation
No student guide would be complete without a discussion on
motivation. Your study success is largely related to your own
As a general rule the
most successful man in
life is the man who has
the best information.
Benjamin Disraeli
