day and by not taking advantage of the smaller units of time, you
could be wasting good study opportunities.
There are many instances during our day we can use to study. Some of
them are:
Waiting for a bus
Time spent traveling
The time in between classes
Lunch breaks
Time spent waiting in line
Times when you don’t feel like doing any sustained studying
It is during these fractions of time that you can still use your time very
effectively. Chapter 6 Study Tools explains some very good tools that
can be used for these periods. By using flash cards, you have the
ability to pickup from anywhere and learn one or two additional
pieces of information. If you add all the journeying time you spend
getting from one place to another, this can add up to a lot of extra
study time during the day. By seizing the numerous fractions of time
being wasted during the day, you’ll be able to squeeze more studying
time.
Being aware of your study cycles
There are certain times during the day that you work at your best.
Each of us has our own best study time. The times that we study best
are called study cycles and it is very important for the student to
become aware of their own.
Some individuals claim that the early morning is the best time for them
to study and others claim that for them it is between 10:00pm and
2:00am. No matter which group you fit into, it is worth your while to
figure out your own study cycle. By knowing your own study cycle,
you will be better able to take advantage of your own levels of
efficiency.
To find out when your study cycles occur, spend a week trying to
study at various times during the day. By writing down and judging
your alertness and cognitive abilities during these hours, you should be
able to determine which the best times are for you.
