Maintaining motivation
Many people believe that they can’t be motivated. We know that
everyone is motivated; it is just a matter of finding the ‘thing’ that
motivates them. The next fear that people encounter is maintaining
that motivation. In many cases they have only found momentary
success with motivation. We still need to keep ourselves motivated.
Runners use running groups to keep motivated and peer pressure has
worked well in schools that advertise student grades. However
neither of these examples will help us to motivate ourselves.
Peer pressure / Social Status: Friendly competition and peer
pressure are very strong motivators for the youth and old
alike.
Reinforcing your goals: By revisiting your goal and why you
are working toward it is another method to maintain
motivation.
Success begets success: By knowing where you have come
from and where you are going, is motivation enough to keep
going. This is a successful formula where your prior success
will lead to your future success.
Once motivated the next step to maintaining that motivation. The
motivation for studying is derived from the same motivation that we
use to motivate us to keep exercising, dieting, and all the other things
we ‘keep’ doing. The problem is that most people start out with the
right intentions, but their enthusiasm and motivation disappear and
they end up stopping what they were doing. Motivation seems to be
that fleeting super-power you have one minute and is gone the next.
Understanding how to maintain your motivation comes from
understanding the things that motivate you.
Motivating ourselves:
The greatest motivation we all have is the ability to mold and shape
our future. Individuals who are concerned with their future take the
necessary steps now to fulfill their dreams. This process is self-
rewarding as each step toward your future creates a growing
enthusiasm and excitement to fulfill the next step. The student that
finishes the 1st year of University is rewarded with passing the first year,
and is equally as enthusiastic with finishing the second year. The
student that completed their degree is rewarded with that degree
and moreover excited at completing another stage taking them
Peer pressure is a
great thing when it
helps you accomplish
your goals instead of
distracting you from
them.
